Observation on Spanish patriotism, first drafted on May 7, published on June 25, 2009

If you want to know what Spain is all about you just have to read the sports section in the May 7 edition of “El
País”. There, in the Latin American edition that is, you will find three pages celebrating the surprising late goal of
Andres Iniesta which secured Barcelona its spot in the 2009 Uefa Champions’ League final. But in none of the
three pages there is even the slightest hint at the fact that there were at least three, if not four situations in that
May 6 semifinal which might just as well have resulted in a penalty for Chelsea.
Instead “El País” is proud to conclude that: “A veces el fútbol es generoso con los equipos virtuosos y cruel con
los malvados, incluso en las situaciones extremas, cuando se impone de nuevo la rendición. Ayer se dio el caso
para suerte del Barςa, siempre positivo, y escarnio del Chelsea, mayormente negativo.”
