"The cynics say..."
Q&A on the Obama campaign between Noah denkt™ and its Alter Ego first drafted on Feb 8,
published in Feb 19, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Question by Alter Ego of Noah denkt™ (Q): Looks like your Hillary-prediction will be proven wrong and that
Obama will win the Democratic Primaries.
Answer by Noah denkt™ (Nd): Well, it looks like it, but it’s not over yet.
Q: So you still are not convinced that Obama will win the Democratic nomination?
Nd: Not altogether.
Q: And why is that?
Nd. Because, he is now the front-runner, and so he will come under a different scrutiny just for being that. For too
long has he been viewed as a sympathetic underdog that he would not have to suffer from changing that.
Q: Okay, I see your point. But even though, it still looks very probable now, that he will become the first Afro-
American President of United States. Doesn’t that get you excited?
Nd: A little bit, but not too much.
Q: And why is that?
Nd: Because neither do we like to get our predictions wrong, nor do we think that an Obama presidency will be a
successful one.
Q: And that is because?
Nd: Because we too believe that Obama lacks experienced for the top job. And so we do share the concern that
he will have to waist precious time before understanding that it is only by being a realist that you can actually
achieve things
Q: And what makes you think that Obama is not a realist?
Nd: Well, you just have to look at the way he uses the word “cynic” or the way he is basking in this “New America”-
rhetoric to understand how much of dreamer he actually is.
Q: But what’s wrong with trying to unify a divided country?
Nd: There is nothing wrong with that. It is just that you have to have a real project to do that. And it is not enough
to point to the fact that you are young and black to actually realize such a cross-party goal.
Q: But how can you say that he does not have a real project when there is a ton of proposals out there that he
has committed to in case he wins the Presidency.
Nd.: You are talking about his intent to end racial profiling, to make health insurance more accessible and to
provide tax credits for educational purposes?
Q: For instance. But there is a lot more than that.
Nd: And you really think that, for instance, a decree to end racial profiling will effectively do away with that?
Q: Well, it is surely better having a decree like that than not having one. And apart from that, even if his policy
measures won’t do the trick, the simple fact that he is part of a minority, and therefore personally knows the
struggle that disenfranchised face will be enough to give the latter hope. And so his Presidency will have an
impact no matter what. For too long has it taken a black man to ascend to the Presidency that this would not have
a profoundly change the national psyche.
Nd: Hopefully you are right. But much rather do we believe that the exact opposite will happen. After all, an
Obama Presidency will rob the Black community of one of last arguments it has to demonstrate that it truly is
being discriminated against. And so his presidency will be even more devastating to it than it had been if he had
not gotten to where he is now. For too many hopes will have been crushed by the time he is done that you could
now still trust that this will help the minorities.
Q: But isn’t that overly pessimistic, not to say “cynical”?
Nd: No, not at all, it is just being reasonable.
Q: So you don’t think that a black man winning the top job will not revitalize the American dream?
Nd: Why should it? After all there is a whole Hollywood marketing machine that is propagating this message all
year round. So it does not strike us as reasonable to believe that an Obama Presidency could achieve something
that legions of black athletes, artists, and even politicians have not been able to do.
Q: But don’t you see that the office of a president is way more emblematic than the prestige of a gold medalist or
a committee chairman
Nd: True, but even that only goes so far.
Q: So there is nothing that I can do to change your mind.
Nd. Well, we don’t believe so.
Q: So we will have to see then who, between you and me, has the better intuition?
Nd: Yes, we shall see.
Q: So let’s be patient then.
Nd. Yes, let’s be patient.

Zusatz zu diesem Q&A vom 28.07.
