Cameron Days
Observation on the Conservative Party Leader, first drafted on Oct. 4, 2007, published on Oct. 6, 2007
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Supposedly the main function of a leader’s speech at a party conference speech is to energize the delegates and
thereby to create a momentum that can help the party to win the next general election.

Funnily enough David Cameron tried to achieve this feat yesterday, principally by showing that he can give this
kind of center-stage speeches in the first place. For too grave were the doubts that he might only be a leading
actor that he could have permitted himself now not give it all he has.

And all, he truly gave. For not only did he forgo the option to hide behind a podium. No he even mastered the
occasion by avoiding the use of a teleprompter and gave instead a carefully crafted free speech that lasted for
more than an hour. For too dearly did he want to get across, that he can fake leadership quality well, that he
could now have allowed himself to stun his audience otherwise.

No, if we want to be honest here, we have to admit that Mr. Cameron survived the casting well. And so we can
sure be that his campaign will be a finely tuned PR machine. For too much has he steeped himself in this craft
that he could now still help to exercise it.

Given therefore that it is more than like that Mr. Cameron will turn out to be an original poster boy candidate, we
encourage voters no to get trapped by his presentableness. For too little substance will they find therein that they
can now still hope to trigger that.

Addition to this observation from Oct. 21, 2010:   By now, we have to admit that we probably underestimated Mr. Cameron's
leadership capability. In this respect, it seems to us as if the 2010 austerity budget which his government introduced just now is of
historic proportions and deserves al our praise.
