Long live Senator Byrd !
Observation on an American hero, published on Oct. 2, 2007

Now, Sen. Biden may be our man for the upcoming Presidential primaries, but Sen. Byrd is, certainly our hero in
American politics. For too courageous and unwavering has his fight for reason been to date, that one could now
avoid granting him this special status.
No, anyone who doubts, whether his presence in the U.S. Senate is still indispensable should listen to the
opening remarks he made this week on the Iraqi war (Hearing of the Senate Appropriatons Committee,
Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007). And so he will immediately understand that his voice must continuously be heard.
For too passionate is his battle for truth and honesty here, that he could easily be replaced by others now.
No, no, if we do not want to lie to ourselves, we have to admit, that the really courageous there are far and few
and in between. And so we can only hope that Sen. Byrd will make his presence felt for years to come. For too
impressive is his independence stance that we could now still trust, to keep it there without his clairvoyance.
Given therefore that his commitment to democracy really is unique, we want to thank for all that he has done. For
too important has his contribution been to sanity, that we can easily maintain it now without his gravity.
